Project Benefits

This new line will have significant benefits for electric customers in our region – including those in Pennsylvania served by PPL Electric Utilities.

First, the line will help prevent overloads on existing power lines that could lead to power outages for PPL Electric Utilities customers.

Second, it will help PPL Electric Utilities and the region’s utilities meet demand for electricity, which has been increasing steadily.

Third, the line will shore up the electric delivery system in our region, making it less likely that a problem with one power line would lead to a regional blackout like the one that affected millions of people in August 2003.

PJM Interconnection, the independent company that operates the electric power grid for a 13-state region including Pennsylvania, has determined that this power line is needed by May 2012 to avoid overloading existing power lines – a situation that could lead to PPL Electric Utilities customers not having electricity when they need it the most.
