Segment 1 - Susquehanna to Stanton (29.9 miles) -- From the PPL Electric Utilities Susquehanna switchyard in Salem Township, Luzerne County, to the Stanton Substation in Exeter Township, Luzerne County.
There will be no major construction work and no changes in the existing power line right of way for this segment of the Susquehanna-Roseland power line.
The existing power line on this segment, built in the early 1980s, was designed so it could be upgraded in the future. Now operating at 230 kilovolts, it will be energized at 500 kilovolts.
The only work to be done on this segment will be an upgrade of one of two existing overhead ground wires, which will be replaced with fiber optic cable. It may be possible to do this work from helicopters, although there will still be some light construction work on the ground.
Near the Susquehanna end of this segment, we will build one to two miles of new power line – all on PPL property near the Susquehanna power plant – so that the Susquehanna-Roseland line can be connected to the 500-kilovolt substation instead of the 230-kilovolt substation, where it is currently connected. Also, the existing line now connects to the Stanton Substation. This will be changed: The Susquehanna-Roseland line will bypass the Stanton Substation on existing PPL Electric Utilities right of way. |
