Project Updates
Feb. 22, 2008 - Information gathering begins We’ve started gathering the information we will need to pick the best possible route for the new power line. We will study aerial photography, maps and data from the Geographic Information System. (This system, often called GIS, contains computerized information on the social, natural, political and cultural features of the area.)
We will use all this information to help find possible routes for the power line. We’ll also consider using existing power line routes, if practical, which could eliminate the need to build a new line where one does not already exist.
In picking these possible routes, we will balance several key objectives:
- Minimizing inconvenience for property owners
- Protecting the environment
- Ensuring reliable electric service in our region
- Keeping costs low, because electric customers pay for new power lines in their rates. (This line is a regional resource, so the cost will be shared by 51 million electric customers in the Northeastern United States.)
Public workshops will be held We will schedule public workshops throughout the region. At these workshops, we will present possible power line routes for your review and comment. We will consider your comments to help select one preferred route for the line.
About the project With demand for electricity increasing and existing power lines facing the danger of becoming overloaded, the PJM Interconnection, our regional power pool, has directed that this new line be built to help ensure continued reliable electric service for our region. It will run from a PPL Electric Utilities substation near Berwick, Pa., to a Public Service Electric and Gas Co. substation near Roseland, N.J. PPL is building the Pennsylvania portion, and the New Jersey portion is being built by PSE&G.
Comments? Your input is important to us and will be considered as we choose the best route for this new power line. Our e-mail address is reliablepower@pplweb.com
